An Invitation to Rest

When we don’t get enough rest we become more susceptible to illness, our heart suffers, our cancer risk increases, our brain does not function properly, our memory suffers, our libido is diminished, we gain weight, we don’t smile as often, we put ourselves at risk for high blood pressure, and we are more likely to be depressed. A recent survey found that people who get enough rest had well-being scores twice as high as those who don’t.  And today, Jesus is inviting us to step out of the everlasting busyness that curses our lives and enter into His rest. I stand before you today as someone who does not get near the amount of rest I should. And I have been so convicted this week that my lack of rest is evidence of a lack of faith in God. I have not trusted God enough to stop working, stop doing, making things happen. And it’s time for that to change! It’s time to enter His rest.

Hold Fast to Him

After their miraculous deliverance at the Red Sea, it didn’t take God’s people but a few days to loosen their grip on God. Three days and they had let go. So God knew He was going to have to teach them to hold fast to Him. And that was going to involve some hardship. That was going to involve some pain. But if they were going to conquer armies, if they were going to be a light to the world, if they were going to bring His blessing to lost and wicked people, they were going to have to learn to hold onto Daddy and never let go.  Guess what? The same is true for us. In this world full of monsters and all kinds of scary things, God is on a mission to get us to hold fast to Him. He’s saying: “Hold onto me and you’ll always be safe. Hold onto me and you will lack nothing. Hold onto me and I’ll make you into a great and mighty nation that will bring my blessing to the world.”

All for the Glory of God

The solution to all human problems is contained in this one thing. If you and I would only choose to stop living, working, and breathing for the kingdom of ourselves, and instead live, work, and breathe for the glory of God, the joy and strength of God would be constant in our lives.  Can you imagine going to your work, your neighborhood, your home, living your life in such a way that people look at you and think, “God is wonderful”?  Today, God is inviting us to embrace our true purpose and live all for the glory of God. And I can think of no better life than that.
